MEDICAL ELECTIVE PROGRAM IN SRI LANKA

Our Medical Elective Program offers a unique opportunity for medical, dental, nursing, and allied health students to gain real-world exposure in a vibrant and culturally rich environment. Hosted in both government teaching hospitals and private healthcare institutions, the program provides a structured and immersive experience tailored to your academic background and career goals.

Whether you’re an undergraduate medical student, a nursing trainee, or a future dentist or care assistant, this program allows you to observe and understand healthcare delivery in a developing country. You’ll gain exposure to both urban and rural healthcare settings while contributing to meaningful community health initiatives.

Application Requirements

*University Students (Medicine/Dentistry): Must apply at least 4 weeks before arrival to secure placement in government hospitals. An official Offer Letter will be issued. A placement fee of USD $100 per week is required by the Faculty of Medicine.

* Others (Non-medical or High School Graduates): May apply up to 2 weeks prior to arrival for placement in private facilities.

 

Placement Options

Placements are organized based on your field and level of study:

  • Medical and Dental Students (University Level):
    Clinical observation placements are offered in government teaching hospitals, such as Colombo North Teaching Hospital – Ragama, under the supervision of experienced consultants. Exposure includes general medicine, surgery, pediatrics, gynecology,
  • Nursing, Care Assistant, and Allied Health Students:
  • Placement is arranged in private hospitals and clinics, ideal for those seeking insight into outpatient care, diagnostics, and patient support roles.
  • High School Leavers and Non-Medical Backgrounds:
    Observational placements are provided in private healthcare settings where students can explore the basics of hospital operations, public health, and patient care.

 

Schedule and Duration

  • Program runs Monday to Friday, with hospital work from 8:00 AM to 12:00 Noon
  • Weekends are free for cultural activities and travel
  • Minimum duration: 2 weeks | Maximum: 4 weeks

 

Please note that placement locations and working hours may vary depending on hospital schedules, local holidays, and your specific area of interest. All placements are organized in advance and include supervision by qualified medical professionals.
