Proposal for Ocean, Beach, and Marine Life Volunteer Program

Introduction:

We are thrilled to present an exciting volunteer opportunity designed for individuals who are passionate about the ocean, beaches, and marine life. This program offers an immersive experience for volunteers to actively contribute to marine conservation efforts while indulging in their love for the sea and its fascinating inhabitants.

Objectives:

  1. Marine Conservation: Engage volunteers in hands-on activities aimed at protecting and preserving marine ecosystems, contributing to the sustainability of our oceans.
  2. Beach Cleanup: Work together to clean and maintain coastal areas, ensuring pristine beaches for both humans and marine life.
  3. Education and Awareness: Raise awareness about the importance of ocean conservation, inspiring volunteers to become advocates for marine protection. 

 

Program Overview:

Day 1 – Arrival and Orientation:

  • Welcome and introduction to the program’s goals and activities.
  • Orientation session covering safety protocols, marine conservation methods, and the local ecosystem.

Days 2 to 6 – Volunteer Activities:

  • Daily beach cleanups to remove debris and plastic waste, preventing harm to marine life and ecosystems.
  • Participation in underwater cleanups for experienced divers, targeting submerged litter.
  • Collaborative efforts to rescue and rehabilitate marine creatures, such as sea turtles or stranded marine mammals.
  • Interactive workshops on marine ecology, sustainable practices, and conservation advocacy.

Day 7 – Culmination and Reflection:

  • Gather for a closing ceremony to celebrate volunteer contributions and shared experiences.
  • Reflection session to discuss the impact of volunteers’ efforts and the importance of ongoing marine conservation.

Logistics:

  • Location: The program will be conducted in coastal areas known for their diverse marine life and stunning beaches.
  • Accommodation: Participants will stay in comfortable accommodations, fostering a sense of camaraderie among volunteers.
  • Meals: Nutritious meals will be provided, including local seafood options that promote sustainable fishing practices.
  • Transport: Transportation to program activities and project sites will be arranged.

Budget:

Funds will cover participant accommodations, meals, transportation, conservation materials, educational resources, and administrative costs. Funding sources can include participant fees, grants, corporate partnerships, and individual donations.

US$2,000 per person

Itinerary-Sri Lanka – Ocean, Beach, and Marine Life Volunteer Program

SUNDAY

All the volunteers will be gathered at the pick-up point on Sunday at noon (hotel close to the airport). Lunch will be provided at the hotel. The Country Coordinator, with the Program Coordinators, will run the orientation after lunch. (1.00pm). The teams will leave for their respective cities with their Program Coordinators in the afternoon (at 2.30pm approx.).

Late evening 

  • Reaching Galle accommodation.
  • Relax & rewind.
  • Dinner.
 

MONDAY

Mid-Day

Pause in work and travel back to the accommodation.

Afternoon

Embark on a captivating river tour aboard a boat and explore the enchanting Madol Duuwa island nestled in the heart of the river. Uncover the enigma of the Mangrove Island as you participate in the process of crafting cinnamon powder, savor the flavors of aromatic cinnamon tea, and take a leisurely stroll through the island’s lush terrain. Immerse yourself in a learning experience that encompasses the island’s diverse trees, avian inhabitants, and fascinating wildlife.

Participating in turtle conservation is more than a volunteer opportunity; it’s a chance to be a part of safeguarding a vital ecosystem. By helping these majestic creatures thrive, you contribute to preserving biodiversity, maintaining marine balance, and educating others about our interconnected world. Joining turtle conservation efforts means leaving a lasting impact on the planet’s delicate balance and ensuring these incredible animals have a future.

Travel to turtle farm. Introduction of work site and orientation. Work begins.

Pause in work and travel back to the accommodation

Touring the historic city of Galle offers an immersive journey through time. Walk the cobblestone streets of the UNESCO-listed fort, where colonial charm meets coastal beauty. Discover centuries-old architecture, visit vibrant markets, and soak in the rich heritage. Explore the fusion of cultures, indulge in local flavors, and witness the stunning sunset over the Indian Ocean. Galle promises an unforgettable experience that bridges the past and the present.

WEDNESDAY

Break and continue assisting in turtle farm.

Pause in work and travel back to the accommodation.

Late afternoon & evening 

Dinner – Learning how to cook a Sri Lankan meal holds immense value for international volunteers. It’s not just about culinary skills, but a gateway to deeper cultural understanding and meaningful connections. By mastering local recipes, volunteers not only enrich their own experiences but also bridge cultural gaps, fostering authentic interactions with locals. Cooking a Sri Lankan meal becomes a way to share stories, traditions, and values, transcending language barriers. Ultimately, this culinary journey nurtures a genuine appreciation for the culture and its people, creating lasting memories and fostering cross-cultural harmony.

  • Visiting designated places: To learn about marine conservation methods, and the local ecosystem.

Pause in work and travel back to the accommodation.

Afternoon

Embark on an exhilarating jungle trekking adventure that leads you to the pristine Jungle Beach in Unawatuna, Galle. Traverse lush trails, encountering diverse flora and fauna along the way. Reach the secluded Jungle Beach, surrounded by lush foliage and turquoise waters. This journey promises a blend of adrenaline and tranquility, offering an unforgettable escape into nature’s embrace.

Jungle trekking trip – enjoy the nature in Galle and finally get to the Unawatuna Beach.
